I’ve recently found this old stock lightgun for PS2 and XBOX on ebay and i could not resist giving it a try due to the low listing price.

This lightgun sports some interesting features out of the box:

  • modern LCD compatiblity
  • recoil mechanism
  • autofire switch
  • laser pointer

Unfortunately the build quality isn’t the best: everything is made of cheap plastic and the buttons do not give a good feedback when pressed, including the trigger.

Setting it up was also a pain due to the defective IR led towers (i’ve used an old USB camera without the IR filter to check they were all turned on).

Still, if you manage to set everything up you have a cheap option to play old console lightgun games like Time Crisis 2 and 3 on the PS2.

I’ve also found the USB controller is compatible with the EMS TopGun II. In fact it worked with this Linux driver with 0 code changes. Unofficial windows drivers are also available, but i didn’t try messing them.

Btw if you are looking for a PC-only lightgun, a Wiimote + Wii Zapper shell + Mayflash DolphinBar is probably your best choice due the more responsive IR sensor (still not lag-free, but better than this Xtreme gun).

  1. Hi eadmaster,

Just wondering what the step were to compile that kernel module? I’m trying to do it with the latest groovyarcade (based on arch linux) but I’m having issues (i.e. can’t figureout how to make/build the module). If you could provide any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.
